Canvassing Board

Each of the 83 Board of County Canvassers in the State of Michigan are currently composed of two (2) Republican members and two (2) Democratic members, appointed by the Houghton County Board of Commissioners to four- (4) year terms. Each political party submits names for consideration to the Houghton County Board of Commissioners.

Should there be a vacancy in the middle of a term, the political party of the vacancy must submit three (3) names to the Houghton County Clerk. The Houghton County Clerk will then pick from those names submitted to fill the remainder of the vacant term.

The Canvass Board members are responsible for canvassing the votes cast with the county they serve for every election held in Houghton County. The Board members must certify elections for all local, countywide and district offices which are contained entirely within the county they serve. The County Canvass Board also conducts recounts for all units of government within the county the serve.

Every four (4) years, the County Canvass Board inspects and approves all ballot containers and bags for elections in Houghton County.

The County Clerk serves as the Clerk for the County Canvass Board.
